Why Would We Choose A Bamboo Toothbrush?

Why Would We Choose A Bamboo Toothbrush?

More and more people are now reconsidering plastic products and bamboo toothbrushes are becoming a popular alternative to the traditional plastic kind.

The Colgate brand alone produces more than 359 MILLION METRIC TONS of plastic every year, and a lot of that same plastic ends up in landfills around the world. Plastic was never designed to break down and most plastic products like straws, plastic bags and toothbrushes are extremely difficult to recycle.

Bamboo toothbrushes aren't a new product, but we do recommend that each individual do their research tp find out more about why bamboo may be an excellent alternative to reduce plastic waste from home.

Bamboo has a smaller ecological footprint than plastic because bamboo plants grow quickly. The plant's growing process allows the plant to regrow what was taken for the production of the toothbrush. Bamboo is also biodegradable if used in its raw form, the same way it is used for toothbrush handles.

It is important to also note that the nylon bristles are to be removed prior to disposal of these unique toothbrushes. Bamboo toothbrush handles can be composted, reused as garden plant markers, or or for other DIY household projects. However, just like plastic toothbrush handles, if not disposed of properly, reused or upcycled they will take up space in a landfill if mindlessly thrown away.

Fully biodegradable toothbrushes are also an option. Biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes will have natural fibers for the bristles. It is also important to keep in mind that these natural bristles can tend to be rougher than nylon bristles, which have the potential to cause wear on our enamel and contribute to receding gums. Be sure to speak with a dental hygienist about biodegradable toothbrushes or environmentally-friendly toothbrushes, as they may have the best recommendations for your personal oral hygiene needs.
