Molasses, also called blackstrap molasses is a healthy byproduct of sugar cane’s refining process. The sugar cane is crushed to create juice. It is then boiled once to create cane syrup, or what Jamaicans call it wet sugar. After boiling again the blackstrap molasses liquid emerges and is said to have the lowest sugar content of any sugar cane product.
The wonderment of molasses is that it’s unlike refined sugar, which has zero nutritional value. Molasses contains vital vitamins and minerals, such as:
iron
calcium
magnesium
vitamin B6
selenium
Jamaican Molasses is also used touted as a superfood. While it’s no miracle cure, it has a rich source of several minerals. We obtain our supply from the Hampden sugar factory in Trelawny, one of the oldest and best in Jamaica.
